Congratulations Fabrizio! What are you going to be working on?

Congrats Fabrizio! Does that mean you no longer work at Statebox?

Mainly graphs and Petri nets, I've recently stumbled across a lot of exciting results that I hope to be able to investigate more in depth. Another thing that is not directly related with the project butI hope I'll be able to do anyway is to apply sheaf and (co)homology methods to consensus mechanisms and network models in general, and maybe also to natural language processing :grinning:

I am still very much involved with Statebox actually, but COVID shifted our plans a bit. In general, from a company perspective it is difficult to justify expenditure for basic theoretical research. Whereas you can go to your investors and say "I am paying a developer to do X", how do you exactly motivate that you are paying someone to publish papers? So, in general, I think it's wise to keep the academic side of the business in academia, especially given that the research I'm carrying out now is still very much related to what Statebox is doing

Congrats! :tada:

Your research sounds interesting and I hear you about startups. Startups are hard  I'm on my third. The dream for me (and maybe you too) is to manage a startup while being affiliated with a university. It sounds like you're living the dream  :+1:

Happy New Year and best wishes in 2021!

Happy new year! Usually it's not so easy because universities pose some pretty big restrictions on the IP you produce while working for them

view this post on Zulip Fabrizio Genovese (Jan 01 2021 at 00:42):

In my case it's fine because everything I produce goes into the public domain, but it can be very hard if you are a developer

I'm really happy for you @Fabrizio Genovese! Also it's heartwarming to see a gifted Italian researcher in ACT being actually employed in Italy... it makes me hopeful to come back to the boot, eventually

Actually I'm not finding any balance at all and I'm constantly swamped with things to do, but I try to thrive anyway :grinning:

Constantly swamped = good balance.

Eh, no, not really. I'd rather have work-life balance.

Categorical semantics for consensus (consensi?) and network models sounds cool as heck. Can't wait to hear more about this.
