Hi all,
I thought I'd post here about an interesting thing happening tonight 9PM UK time: we're having a chat about Category theory on the app Clubhouse: https://twitter.com/bgavran3/status/1367203487709356032
I'm excited about this as well! Join us tomorrow 9PM UK time in Clubhouse for a chat about Category Theory - what is it, where it's headed and learn how it helps us facilitate communication between scientific fields. @coecke @HyperboIeva @jbrucj https://twitter.com/jbrucj/status/1365014300881002509
- Bruno Gavranović (@bgavran3)We're going to be talking about what it is, where it's used and really try to bring it closer to many people who are interested.
We're really doing this because we had an impromptu room about a week ago titled "Category theory" and actually got quite a few people there who were interested, or sort of knew what it was, but couldn't "get into it" and it seemed really helpful to be answering questions and, honestly, just having a chat as opposed to typing the answers out like we do most of the time.
For those of you that don't know, Clubhouse is like an "interactive podcast" audio-only app where people can have conversations about anything in a pretty straightforward way. The only requirement at the moment is that you have an iPhone/iPad, since the app is only available there
Oh and we'll have appearances from @Bob Coecke - but really - anyone can join up there on the stage and talk/answer/ask questions :)
Can you record it and post it on youtube? iPhones are really expensive in Brazil
In Europe too
In the US too. I'll never buy one.
I mean, the (average wage)/(iphone price) in the US is 6 times larger than Brazil's, and we also have a worse gini
True.
Anyway, I'm glad @Bruno Gavranovic is doing this.
Yeah, I'm sorry to hear that and I do agree it's all to expensive. I got an iPad to be able to write on virtual whiteboards since we can't meet in person, but it managed to be useful for things like these
Thanks John - it's certainly a question how it's all going to turn out :)
But can you record it?
(Speaking from the perspective of the UK, iPhones are absurdly expensive, but some iPads are surprisingly good value for money)

I'm not sure if we'll able to record it - this is the first time doing such an event and I'm not sure how it works w.r.t. getting consent from all the people attending.
If we do these events in the future we'll probably plan to do a recording
This makes it look like recordings are not allowed.
people have recorded before, didn't know it was not allowed
The articles on that website read like they went through google translate a couple of times. :grimacing:
I've never heard of clubhouse prior to seeing this thread. Even if, as that article indicates, publicizing recordings are against the TOS, I don't see how it's strictly enforceable if the publicizer is careful. They can surely make it inconvenient to make recordings, but even that can easily be bypassed...
Can you send me an invitation?

I guess that the whole point of clubhouse is to be able to have informal chats on the internet without that lurking feeling of being recorded (for what is possible), so that one can be relaxed and informal. If you want to organize chat-only meetings and record them, you can just use another platform (e.g. a public zoom invite with cam disabled).
Very sad I had to miss this!
hope there will be more
I think there will! Last night was a great success - https://twitter.com/coecke/status/1367811432880955396
We also had Brendan Fong joining, and Ilyas Khan as well. Honestly - it was very refreshing to just chat about CT and its role in society today while having a drink or five
Lost my Club House virginity. Weird how sitting with a phone with stupid Apple headphones in an amazing pub with super sound system can lead to a seriously enjoyable drinking session. Thanks @HyperboIeva @bgavran3 @jbrucj https://twitter.com/bgavran3/status/1367638408953225226

I can - DM me your details
You guys are really putting some weight on the "buy an ipad" side of the scales here...
I went with a much cheaper (and more portable) Samsung tablet with an S-pen (SM-P205) back in 2019, which still does the job brilliantly as a productivity tool. If you wanted a tablet you can write on, but were put off by the price of an iPad, I'd certainly recommend having a look. If you are just using it to write notes/think about maths/Zoom/record lectures, and not actually doing any fancy professional video and sound editing, it will do the job just fine. I strongly recommend the LectureNotes app if you have an Android tablet with a pen, btw.
