Do you want to get involved in applied category theory? Are you willing to do a lot of work and learn a lot? Then this is for you!
• Applied Category Theory 2021 - Adjoint School. Applications due Friday 29 January 2021. Organized by David Jaz Myers, Sophie Libkind, and Brendan Fong.
There are four topics to work on with great mentors.
By the way, it's not yet clear if there will be an in-person component to this school, but if there is, it'll happen at the University of Cambridge.
If you're too lazy to look around the school's website, you may prefer to read my blog article on it:
Either way, make sure you read the course descriptions. Cool stuff! For example, you can do a course on applications of structured cospans and wiring diagrams to subjects such as chemistry and epidemiological modeling, taught by @James Fairbanks and @Evan Patterson.
Very cool. I'm guessing the course with James and Evan is also a good excuse to learn the Julia programming language. For a long time now, I've felt Julia would be a great language for ACT :+1: It has a great community and a great ecosystem of packages you can plug into that would be suitable for high-performance industry use.
Yes, they like it.
I just got a nice email from Anna Knörr, a physics student who arranged for me to give a talk (virtually) at ETH Zurich for their Sustainability Week:
I will be part of this year's ACT Adjoint School! I just received the offer this morning and will be part of Evan Patterson and James Fairbanks' team. I was much inspired by the ethos behind Algebraic Julia, contacted Evan via email to inquire about whether he could use a physicist and then thought I'd take a chance with the School - it worked!
Also, my student @Christian Williams will be one of the TAs for Patterson and Fairbanks' class!
Hijacking this topic for a bit: is there any news on what the submission deadline is going to be for ACT2021?
I don't know what the deadline will be. What I know is that Jamie Vicary is the local organizer for ACT2021 and Kohei Kishida will be the program committee chair. So you could ask either of them.
I don't think there's a website for ACT2021 yet - though there is for the ACT2021 Adjoint School.
I made a separate stream for ACT2021, we just put out the call for papers :)
Does anyone know what the status of decisions is for the ACT2021 Adjoint School?
Their website says they'd be in touch with applicants by the end of February but I still haven't heard anything. I emailed them yesterday, no response yet -- I thought I'd check here.
I heard back from them already, FWIW
Did you get in, @Joshua Meyers?
Uh oh. This has the hallmarks of a situation that probably shouldn't have happened
It's possible they have announced the positive decisions already? I know Anna Knorr has gotten in, and she was told this.
I got the notification at the 10th of February.

No
Bummer! This school must be insanely competitive by now. Someone should create some additional programs of this sort to handle the huge demand.
When I was an organiser 2 years ago the accept rate was about 1 in 4 ish, but we had 6 groups and afterwards we advised our successors - last year's organisers - that 6 was too many and less groups would be better. It's a super delicate balance...
