I thought it might be useful to collect together information about the various online category theory seminars out there. Maybe @John Baez and @Paolo Perrone want to chime in. (I would have nested this under "learning" but zulip wouldn't let me.)

From mid Sept - early December we'll run a virtual category theory seminar at Johns Hopkins. The target audience is graduate students who have either already taken a first course in category theory or more realistically have self-studied the material on their own. Most talks are expository and are often given by someone who is learning the topic for the first time. Interruptions to ask questions are highly encouraged.

We wanted to keep the seminar small scale, to save time for other things, so there are only eight talks with no plans to add more (this term at least). But all are welcome to attend and learn along with us. The schedule can be found on either of these websites:

https://researchseminars.org/seminar/blue-jay-cat
http://www.math.jhu.edu/~eriehl/ct/

Note researchseminars.org has a link that will take you into the zoom room (in the lower right hand corner on the announcement for each talk).

Questions? Ask @David Jaz or @tslil (they).

Hi, Emily! We've got a calendar of category theory seminars:

Your seminar seems to be listed here already!

view this post on Zulip John Baez (Sep 05 2020 at 16:41):

It's not clearly stated in this calendar which time zone(s) are being used. We need to fix that!

The calendar is syncing up with the official one, so capitalization is not my fault :)

Yeah, I'm going to update the description. Btw the calendar displays times in the viewer's timezone

view this post on Zulip John Baez (Sep 05 2020 at 18:53):

I thought it was in "my" timezone but I have trouble believing it because the Johns Hopkins seminar is listed as taking place at 14:00, which sounds like the Eastern Time instead of my zone, Pacific Time. Maybe I haven't allowed some gremlin access to my location?

view this post on Zulip John Baez (Sep 05 2020 at 18:53):

But no, the MIT seminar is listed as taking place at 7:00, which sounds like Pacific Time! So I'm confused.

The timing of Johns Hopkins' seminar is quite singular, indeed: here it says 9-11pm UTC https://golem.ph.utexas.edu/category/2020/09/announcing_the_johns_hopkins_v.html
That should be 2pm PST, so it looks like it's working as it's supposed to

Can someone please send me the link for the JHU seminar occuring now? I can't find it on that website.

Never mind I got it, just had to sign up with researchseminars.com

hahaha I don't think it is, given that following that link takes me to the domain name store :rolling_on_the_floor_laughing:
